Updated: November 06, 2023

The first phase of the 400 kV North-South Power Grid Interconnection Project, which is one of Oman's national key projects, was recently completed and put into operation. The completion of this project will significantly enhance the safe and stable operation of Oman's power grid and improve the capacity for mutual assistance and resource allocation between the north and south of the country.

In accordance with Oman Vision 2040 and a 10-year power grid development plan, the Oman Electricity Transmission Company initiated the project's construction in May 2021. The project built five 400 kV substations, installed eight 500 MVA main transformers, two 125 MVA main transformers, and a 670-kilometer-long double-circuit 400 kV overhead transmission line. This transmission network connects the northern main power grid of Oman with the central oil development area and the Special Economic Zone at Duqm on the eastern coastal region.

This project is the largest and most complex transmission and transformation project in the history of Oman's power grid development. State Grid Corporation of China became a shareholder of the Oman Electricity Transmission Company in 2020 and has fully participated in the management and construction of the North-South Power Grid Interconnection project by giving full play to various resources and efforts to progress the project. During the peak construction period, the workforce exceeded 4,000 personnel, including construction and management staff.

A team sent by State Grid Corporation of China to be stationed at the Oman Electricity Transmission Company has completed the North-South Interconnection project to a high standard, relying on its advantages in technology, management, creditworthiness, talent, and branding. Notably, the project had an impeccable safety record, with no safety accidents or environmental pollution incidents, and it achieved 1,060 days of accident-free production.
