Located in North Surkhandarya, the project is expected to increase annual output of the Shargun coal mine to 900,000 metric tons. It will guarantee coal supply in the country and provide new jobs for local people, which will support regional economic growth.

China Railway Group Limited (CREC) was responsible for the project. Chinese construction modes and technologies were adopted.

A key energy construction project in Uzbekistan, the renovation of the coal mine is a major project of Chine-Uzbekistan economic and trade cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
