CNOOC Crude Output Hits New-High at Bohai Oilfield in 2023

Updated: January 25, 2024

Bohai oilfield, China's largest crude oil production base, over the last year yielded a cumulative oil equivalent of more than 36.8 million metric tons, setting an all-time record in annual crude oil and natural gas production.

With crude oil production exceeding 34 million tons and that of natural gas surpassing 3.5 billion cubic meters, the oilfield contributed to ensuring national energy security.

Throughout the year, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) stepped up efforts to increase reserves and boost production at the Bohai oilfield. It discovered the Bozhong 26-6 oilfield with production capacity of 100 million tons and started operation of several oil and gas projects.

It’s worth noting that CNOOC had nearly 2.3 million tons of newly added crude oil output in 2023, accounting for approximately half of the country's total crude oil increment.

In addition, more than 450 wells were put into service last year, contributing over 3.7 million tons of crude oil, which consolidated the foundation for stable and increasing oil and gas production.

According to the company, it now has more than 50 wells and nearly 200 production facilities serving at the oil and gas field. So far, it has accumulated over 500 million tons in oil and gas equivalent output, with daily output exceeding 100,000 tons, making the Bohai oilfield China’s highest-producing and largest offshore oilfield.

In 2023, China was in full swing in offshore oil and gas exploration, with proved petroleum reserves of more than 300 million tons. The offshore crude oil production exceeded 62 million tons, an annual increase of over 3.4 million tons year-on-year and about 70 percent of the national crude oil increment.
