Dual-fuel LNG-powered CMA CGM PARATY delivered in China

Updated: April 19, 2024

CMA CGM PARATY, the No 3 vessel of the dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered large container ship series, was named and delivered at China State Shipbuilding Corp's Changxing shipbuilding base in Huzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, on April 9. This vessel will bring a brand-new China-made large dual-powered container ship to the east coast route of South America.

With the carrying capacity of 13,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the vessel is constructed by CSSC's Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd, in conjunction with China Shipbuilding Trading Co Ltd, for the French shipping and logistics enterprise CMA CGM Group.

As the latest clean energy "marine giant" globally, CMA CGM PARATY was designed by Marine Design & Research Institute of China, with a total length of 336 meters, a width of 51 meters, a depth of 26.8 meters, a designed service speed of 21 knots, and a maximum carrying capacity of 13,200 standard containers.

Equipped with an LNG dual-fuel power system and featuring a 14,000-cubic-meter Mark III type LNG cargo containment system, CMA CGM PARATY is powered by CSSC's world-leading independently branded CMD-WinGD9X9DF-2.0 main engine. It also comes with a global new-generation intelligent control exhaust gas recirculation system, which reduces methane emissions in gas mode by more than 50 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by over 28 percent.

The ship is also specially designed with a huge flow guide plate at the bow, which can save 2-4 percent fuel consumption during actual operation. At the stern, an energy-saving flow guide device is installed, which can improve propeller propulsion efficiency, significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions and cut energy consumption by about 1.5 percent. It is the latest and most advanced generation of green, efficient and energy-saving container ships globally, boasting the characteristics of flexible cargo loading, leading technology, energy conservation and environmental protection functions.

During the construction process, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding continuously optimized and expanded digital transformation and techniques, achieving significant results. The entire ship's construction process utilized 100 percent 3D visual technology and accurately detected steel plate defects, digital trial assembly and a series of digital production processes, significantly improving construction efficiency. This has resulted in the best integrity of the series of ships leaving the dock and the fastest sea trial records, striving to create a new brand of large container ships in China.
