China’s First Comprehensively Green-Designed Offshore Oilfield Completes First Crude Export

Updated: August 26, 2024

A tanker carrying approximately 25,000 tons of crude oil recently departed from the single-point mooring area at the Wushi terminal in Leizhou city, Guangdong province, marking the completion of the first crude oil export operation from the Wushi 23-5 oilfield cluster.

Located in the Beibu Gulf, the Wushi 23-5 oilfield cluster has an average water depth of about 28 meters and consists of two offshore platforms and one onshore terminal. It is China’s first comprehensively green-designed offshore oilfield and the first to transport oil and gas from 2,000 meters below the sea to the Leizhou Peninsula. It is also the first oilfield in the Beibu Gulf to achieve “zero discharge” of produced water, setting a benchmark for low-carbon transformation in offshore oil exploration and production.

As part of the transformation, oil containment booms were deployed to prevent any environmental pollution during the oil loading process. The crude oil export was officially completed on August 18, following a single round of operations. The cargo, consisting of 30,000 cubic meters (approximately 25,000 tons) of crude oil, was delivered to Basuo Port in Hainan, with an estimated value of about 100 million yuan ($14.01 million).

The Wushi 23-5 oilfield cluster is expected to reach a peak daily production rate of approximately 18,100 barrels of oil equivalent by 2026, producing primarily light crude oil.
