Bangladesh's First Large-Scale Wind Power Plant up and Running

Updated: October 08, 2024

The Cox’s Bazar wind power plant in Bangladesh has been officially handed over. The plant, built by Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina), is the first wind power project developed by a Chinese company in Bangladesh.

As a key national project and Bangladesh's first large-scale centralized wind power plant, Cox’s Bazar has an installed capacity of 66 megawatts, along with a booster station that includes an office building, a power distribution building and auxiliary facilities. The project will provide Bangladesh with an average of 144.92 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, thereby reducing coal consumption by 44,500 tons.

It will play an important role in energy conservation, environmental protection and the provision of pollution-free energy. It is also vital for upgrading Bangladesh's power grid and promoting high-quality and green development in the local economy.

The project team from PowerChina completed the grid connection of the southern and northern wind power plants in May 2023 and July 2024 respectively, eventually achieving the project’s full commercial operation.
