The first batch of avocados bearing traceability labels co-branded by China COSCO SHIPPING Corporation Limited (COSCO SHIPPING Group) and the Port of Chancay recently arrived in Shanghai from Peru, marking a breakthrough in full-chain traceability from Peruvian orchards to Chinese dining tables.
This achievement establishes a new digital safeguard for food safety in China and represents the official launch of the Version 1.0 traceability labeling cooperation between the two sides. The batch was shipped via COSCO SHIPPING Group’s WSA5 service on April 27, setting a new benchmark for smart cold chain logistics.
Traditionally high-quality fruits such as avocados, blueberries, grapes, and mangoes from Peru faced long shipping times, limiting their availability on Chinese tables. However, the launch of COSCO SHIPPING Group’s WSA5 route earlier this year has revolutionized this landscape. With a significantly reduced transit time of just 23 days from Chancay to Shanghai, coupled with advanced digital cold chain technologies, Chancay Port has rapidly emerged as a pivotal player in the Peruvian fruit trade and has become a crucial gateway for Peruvian fruits entering the Chinese market.
In Peru, COSCO SHIPPING Group established a dedicated task force that, in collaboration with China Certification Inspection Group (CCIC) South America, has continuously enhanced digital traceability technologies. The team also worked closely with Chinese fruit buyers, Peruvian suppliers, and packing facilities to gain deep insights into market demand. Meanwhile, COSCO SHIPPING Lines Co., Ltd. and COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited have jointly set up a specialized group to standardize labeling procedures, streamline operational processes, and ensure seamless data sharing.
The launch of the Version 1.0 traceability labeling for fruits at Chancay Port not only allows Chinese consumers to enjoy fresh and safe South American products, but also positions “digital traceability” as a new hallmark of Peruvian fruit exports — injecting new vitality into bilateral trade and economic cooperation between China and Peru.
