The Inspiring Journey of Nigeria’s First Female Train Driver

Issah Fatimah Abiola is a local employee at China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited in Nigeria. Among her Chinese colleagues, she is better known by her Chinese name — Bai Yang.

As Nigeria’s first female train driver, Issah has safely operated more than 2,000 trips on the Abuja Light Rail. Rising from an office assistant in 2008 to a skilled technical trainer, her inspiring story has been featured in People’s Daily and on China Central Television.

Beyond her professional achievements, she has also taught herself Chinese and actively promotes cultural exchange between the two nations. She was awarded the “China-Nigeria Friendship Contribution Award” and is widely recognized as an exemplary model of cross-cultural collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative.
