A New Vessel for Offshore Wind Turbine Blade Transportation

Updated: October 09, 2025

COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers Co., Ltd. (COSCO SHIPPING Specialized), a subsidiary of China COSCO SHIPPING Corporation Limited, has successfully completed the loading of the first batch of 15 turbine blades (each 81 meters in length) for the B81 offshore wind power project, marking the successful transportation of offshore wind turbine blades by a 68,000-deadweight-ton (DWT) multi-purpose vessel for the first time.

This project consists of 60 blades, which are scheduled to be transported in four batches. Offshore turbine blades are heavier than onshore ones, and their supporting frames can’t be stacked, posing higher requirements for technical planning and on-site execution.

To address these challenges, the project team designed a dedicated stowage plan. By adopting independently developed blade supports, they broke through the limitation of single-layer loading and achieved double-layer stacking, efficiently reducing transportation time and costs for the customer.

COSCO SHIPPING Specialized has provided ocean transportation of wind power equipment for many years. This new mode of carrying turbine blades on 68,000-DWT multi-purpose vessels will enrich the variety of the company’s fleet of blade-transporting ships, enabling them to offer clients enhanced services and greater scheduling flexibility.
