The Julius Nyerere Hydropower Station, Tanzania’s largest hydropower station, has been officially commissioned.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan attended the commissioning ceremony and announced its official launch. Chen Mingjian, Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, and Chu Kun, commercial counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania, were also present at the event.

During the ceremony, President Hassan toured the station to learn about its operation. She spoke highly of the project’s construction quality and performance. She said that the hydropower station currently supplies approximately half of Tanzania’s total electricity, and the additional capacity will effectively ease the country’s long-standing power shortage woes.

Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC) provided a full suite of services for the hydropower station, including the development, supply, installation, commissioning and trial operation of all turbines, generators and main inlet valves. The station is equipped with nine 235-megawatt Francis turbines made by DEC, boasting a total installed capacity of 2,115 MW. This project set a record as China’s largest single export contract for hydropower equipment under an independent brand.
